MEPs have agreed on a proposal to make the deforestation rules adopted in 2023 easier to implement in practice. The EU wants to prevent products linked to the destruction of tropical and other forests - from coffee to palm oil, timber to beef - from entering the European market.

Under the Parliament's new position, all companies will be given an additional year to comply. Large operators and traders will have to comply with the new rules from 30 December 2026, while small and micro businesses will have to comply from 30 June 2027. The additional time is to ensure a smooth transition and to allow for the strengthening of the IT system through which electronic declarations of origin will be submitted.

MEPs also propose to simplify the due diligence system. The obligation to submit traceability declarations should be borne by the company that first places the product on the EU market, not by those who later resell it. Micro and small companies should only have to make a one-off, simplified declaration.
